Virtual Tour Station 13 The Bluff Face: An Ancient Sea Bed

Pictured here are hundreds of skeletons from sea animals barely the size of a little toe that decorate the Burlington Limestone found throughout the park. If you look closely you can see traces of these ancient animals and tell that the rock is porous like a sponge. When naturally acidic rainwater percolates through the rock, it dissolves the limestone and creates openings. These openings can grow until they are large enough for underground streams to flow through them. If the streams emerge on the surface, they become springs. When these water-filled passages drain, they become caves. This solution process results in what is known as karst features. Although this process formed these features hundreds of thousands of years ago water is still shaping the features of this area.
